FATHER’S DAY PROGRAMMING AND PROMOTIONS IDEAS/NEW GIFT IDEASThe idea for an official Father’s Day celebration came to a married daughter, sitting in church in Spokane, Washington during a Mother’s Day sermon in 1910, two years after the first Mother’s Day observance in West Virginia. But, it wasn’t until 62 years after it was proposed, in 1972 that Father’s Day was permanently established by President Richard Nixon. So, maybe that might make Tricky Dick just a little more popular, at least with dads. In America today, Father’s Day is the fifth-largest card-sending occasion, with about 85 million greeting cards exchanged. But if your listeners want to give dad something a little sexier than a card, here are some new cool, new tech gift ideas: If dad travels for a living and has nightmares about lost luggage, the GPS Pocket Finder Luggage Locator might be just for him. Think of this a Lojack for luggage. It costs $130 plus a monthly subscription fee and can be found at pocketfinder.com. Dad might also enjoy the benefits of a Slingbox. Essentially with a Slingbox, if you’ve got an Internet connection, you’ve got access to your home TV and whatever is on your DVR via your laptop computer. You can also record TV shows that you forgot to record before leaving home, while on the road. It costs $180 for a non-HD box and $300 for an HD model. You can find that at slingmedia.com. Having enough electrical outlets, anywhere these days, let alone in a hotel room, to power up all of your portable electronics is a challenge. Chargepod allows you to charge up to six portable devices including cell phones, MP3 players, games, etc. with just one electrical outlet or via the lighter outlet in your car. The price starts at $40 for the base unit plus adapters at $10 each. You can find that at callpod.com. If you’ve missed the joys of instantly printing a Polaroid photo, a new version of that process is back. The Polaroid Pogo Instant Mobile Printer fits in the palm of your hand and prints your digital photos in 60 seconds on heat-sensitive photo paper that doesn’t need ink. That means there are no replacement ink cartridges to deal with. The downside of these photos is the quality is more like what you’d get in a boardwalk photo booth. But, the 2 x 3-inch photos are sticker backed making them fun to share with the kids. It costs $100 and can be found at polaroid.com. Now this one is just about to be released, so I don’t know if it will be out by Father’s Day but it is a very attractive piece of technology. The MIFI Wireless Internet Hub is a pocket-sized router that turns your high-speed 3G connection into a portable Wi-Fi network. Essentially it turns you into your own walking, talking hot spot. Up to five people can connect at a time on any wireless device. Imagine how popular you could make your dad with this device! It will set you back $200 and details about it can be found at novatelwireless.com.
