A new survey of more than 600 American Express travel agents suggests that, while Americans continue to book summer vacations, they are being savvier travelers and making some trade offs to help offset their travel costs.

66% of the agents say their clients feel that their summer vacation is too important to their mental health to give it up altogether. 45% say travelers are booking about the same length summer vacation this year as in the past. However, not surprisingly, a whopping 89% of the agents say they are receiving more inquiries about deals this year than in the recent past.

Here are a few of the American Express travel agent tips to help you save some money on your summer vacation this year:

1. Use credit card rewards points and frequent flier miles to offset vacation costs.

2. Look for packages with free night promotions.

3. Consider a cruise. This all-inclusive vacation option offers something for everyone and helps travelers manage their budgets by ensuring that virtually all the costs are included.

4. Be flexible about travel dates. The best travel deals are midweek.

5. Consider a couples-only resort. There are deep discounts currently available.

6. Use companion airline benefits that allow you to get a discounted or free airfare when you purchase one.
