RAISING THE STEAKS

July is National Grilling Month and what better way to celebrate that than with a grilling competition.  Now, I have never met a guy who doesn’t think he makes the greatest steaks on the grill.  (Come on, admit it!  You all think you’re Bobby Flay.)  So, consider tapping into this machismo and putting together a grilling contest called Raising the Steaks, the ultimate man meets meat competition!

You could get this started by having one of the guys on the morning show claim he makes the best steaks on the grill.  Others on the show could challenge him to “put his meat where his mouth is” (Oh that’s so wrong.)  and take on some listeners in a grilling grudge match.

Select contestants via on-air phone calls or route them to enter online via your website.  Make them answer the question, “What makes your meat better than (jock’s name here)’s meat?” Pick a few of the more creative or interesting entries to compete against your air personality.

You can have as few or as many guys in the competition as you can provide grills and grilling supplies.  You may even be able to find some guys with their own grills who are willing to bring them to the event, which would save you some money and hassle.  Think about having a few of the guys who will compete on the air talking smack with your air personality on the days leading up to the actual event to add some creative tension to this idea.

Now, of course, you know your air personality has to lose this competition to make this work well, don’t you?  The more he screws up the grilling process the more entertaining this will be.  Self effacement is a powerful programming tool!  Bobby Flay loses most of the throwdowns he has with the “little guy” cooks on his Food Network show Throwdown with Bobby Flay for a reason.  It makes him look more human and vulnerable.

Invite a local restaurant critic, TV sports guy, steakhouse chef and/or other local celebrities to judge the steaks.  The winning steak will be raised high and praised as the mightiest of meat and its cook awarded some sort of prize like a new grill, Home Depot gift card or some other manly grilling reward.  You could also print up a “man-apron” or with the station’s call letters and a phrase like “I grill the mightiest meat.”, “Man met meat and I won”, or even something racier if your audience appreciates something more edgy.
