THIS NEW YEAR’S EVE WILL BE ASTRONOMICALLY EXTRAORDINARY!

This New Year’s Eve is not only is the last day of the decade, but it’s also going to include some really rare lunar occurrences, occurrences that all seldom happen on New Year’s Eve.  There will be a full moon, a blue moon, and a lunar eclipse this New Year’s Eve 2009.

When there are two full moons in a month the second one is called a blue moon and they only occur every 2.72 years or 41 months in a century.  Hence the term “once in a blue moon”.  The last blue moon occurred in May of 2007 and the next one won’t happen until August of 2012.

Since so many people believe full moons cause us to act in strange ways, what will this triple dose of astronomical whammies cause us to do this New Year’s Eve?  Personally I’m hoping this unusual planetary configuration is a portend of a better decade ahead.  Goodbye and good riddance, 2009!  Hello and welcome, 2010!
