NOW THAT’S BAD FOR US TOO?On January 11th, 1964 the United States Surgeon General Luther Terry released the first government report saying smoking may be hazardous to one’s health. But, as anyone who watches the TV series Mad Men or any old black and white movie knows, before that date, nobody ever worried about lighting up a cigarette. Anyone who was conceived before that date probably grew up with people smoking all around them. When I was a kid I had a care giver who drove me the nine miles each way to and from school with all the windows rolled up in the car chain smoking like a chimney stack and god help us if we tried to crack open a window to let some oxygen in. If anyone did that today the Department of Children and Family Services would probably hear about it. This brings to mind the topic, “Now That’s Bad For Us Too?” Remember when eight glasses of water was supposed to be good for us? Now we’ve found out that too much water can kill us. Wait, let’s go back even further. Remember when drinking tap water was just fine? Now that’s bad for us too? Be sure to get a mammogram once a year. Oh, now that’s bad for us. What’s next? Fiber, the silent killer? Consider adding to this list and then opening up the phones to create your final “Now That’s Bad For Us Too” list. You must be logged in to post a comment. |
