MARCH BADNESS

Now that the NCAA National Basketball tournament brackets have been filled, consider a little twist on the idea of March Madness called March Badness,   The premise of March Badness is to determine who is the biggest celebrity badass. The game is played much like the classic celebrity cage match game.

To make this a little easier for your listeners to comprehend on the air, you would only come up with the names of a maximum of eight badass celebrities.  You could begin this bit on the air by soliciting listeners to come up with the eight biggest badass celebrities that they would like to see fight in your tournament and which ones they would like to see fight each other.

Possible tournament candidates could be guys who have ended up in the news for doing something violent like Charlie Sheen, Chris Brown, Christian Bale, Sean Penn, Alex Baldwin and Russell Crowe.  You could also just add actors with tough guy images like Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames, Chazz Palminteri and James Gandolfini.

After you’ve come up with your eight biggest badass celebrities, pair them in virtual cage matches.  Maybe it’s Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Brown, Christian Bale against Bruce Willis and Chazz Palminteri versus James Gandolfini, and so on.  After you’ve filled your badass brackets, post a printable copy on your website so that your listeners can have a hard copy of the March Badness tournament pairings.

To begin the tournament you’d have four matches to work with over a period of four days on the air.  Each day you would announce a match and have listeners call in and say why they think one of the celebrities would defeat the other in a “bad ass” cage match.  At the end of each show you would have a winning badass who would advance in the tournament to take on a new competitor in the semi-finals which would take another four days to complete before you would get to the championship fight.

As you execute this idea on the air, don’t forget to add production elements to add some entertainment value to it.  The Theme from Rocky will work well as a music bed, but maybe you can come up with something a little less obvious to use.  Just before you reveal each winner, consider putting together a string of sound effects like punches, kicking and grunting noises that would simulate a short virtual fight on the air.

Consider having some kind of pool where members of your morning show predict the winners just like the pools offices around the country are involved in right now for March Madness.  This will add yet another level of creative tension to this idea.  Offer some sort of prize plus bragging rights for the person on your show who predicts which badass will take home your 2010 Biggest Badass trophy.
