HOW LONG SHOULD A MAN HAVE DATED A WOMAN BEFORE PASSING GAS IN FRONT OF HER?

This only goes to prove that there is a survey about just about anything.  Someone actually asked a group of people how long a man should have dated a woman before he passes gas in front of her.  While 34% of women believe that this should never be deemed acceptable, many women disagreed.  39% of women believe that a man should wait until they have officially become boyfriend and girlfriend.  13% think a man should at least wait until the end of a first date, and 12% of women wanted that moment to wait until they were living together.  The remaining 2% believed the question was too gross to answer.

EMPLOYERS ARE CHECKING YOUR CREDIT SCORE

When you’re looking for a job, you’re probably not thinking about your credit score.  But you might want to start.  Though many people argue that credit scores have nothing to do with their capabilities on the job, some employers say differently.  60% of employers recently surveyed by the Society of Human Resource Management said they run credit checks on all or some potential new hires.  That’s up from 43% in 2006 and 25% in 1998.

Opinions on whether or not this is fair vary.  Supporters of credit checks don’t think it’s any different than checking a candidate’s references.  But opponents see it as unfair – especially in this economy – because of medical problems, divorce, or a job layoff and subsequent missed bills can wreck an otherwise perfect credit score in an instant.

So, why do employers look at your credit history?  The reasons vary.  Sometimes it can be because of the position to which you’re applying.  Certain categories of employers such as banks, brokerage houses, government and other financial institutions regularly review credit histories.  Evaluation of credit history is frequently applied to accounting and money management positions where there is potential for fraud and embezzlement.

Other employers look at credit histories in order to separate one candidate from another.  Credit report information is a good data point when comparing and contrasting two or more candidates applying for the same position.  If an applicant reports a significant level of personal debt or credit delinquencies those might distract that person from his or her job responsibilities.

Some employers use candidates’ credit histories to get a better idea of the person they are considering hiring.  Relying on character references is becoming less reliable than verifying records.  Credit checks can verify demographic and location information and will include identifiers such as name, spouse, Social Security number, alias, address, phone and previous employment.  A credit report can provide a snapshot of a person’s economic life that may confirm or contradict the resume. IF YOU’RE TRYING TO GET IN SHAPE THINK POSITIVE!

Research at the University of Chicago found that feeling chipper boosts your physical endurance.  In simple hand-grip tests, positive people improved their results by up to 10 times more than their pessimistic equivalents.  “A positive mood enables you to see things as opportunities – any task is surmountable,” explains study author Aparna Labroo.  The message is, if you feel good about your impending workout, your performance will improve.

I NEED A VACATION FROM MY KIDS

We’ve reached the point in the summer when parents have reached their wits end with their children.  So, consider the topic, “If My Kids Do That One More Time I’m Going to Scream.” Solicit your audience for the annoying repetitive things their kids are doing this summer and make a list of the top 5 most annoying summer kid behaviors.  Things like “I’m bored” or repetitive video game noises are sure to make the list along with Disney movies that get played over and over.  Consider offering some sort of “get-away-from-the-kids” prize like movie tickets to a grown up film, spa gift certificates, or weekend stays at a local hotel to give the most beleaguered of the parents you hear from.

DOES YOUR PET NEED SUNSCREEN?

If your pet is spending a lot of time outside this summer, don’t forget the sunscreen.  Ironically, some cats and dogs need sunscreen to protect them from skin cancer just like humans.  Sunburn is more of a problem for cats.  If a cat is burned often it can eventually get skin cancer.  Dogs are less likely to sit and soak up the sun, but some are vulnerable.  White dogs need to have their hairless areas protected and breeds with short hair, like bull terriers, are susceptible.  But, don’t just use any old sunscreen on your pets because they will lick their coats so it has to be safe to ingest.  Human sunscreen can contain gross things like zinc, salicylate and PABAs, all which are pretty unpleasant to eat.

DO YOU LEAVE THE GAME ON WHEN YOU HAVE SEX?

Millions of Americans will be watching the 2010 Major League Baseball All-Star game tonight on Fox.  Most likely, watching the game is not the only thing we’ll be doing while it’s on.  92% of us have eaten lunch or dinner with a game on.  39% have had a game on at work.  35% of us have had a game on while working out.  But, what happens if there’s romance in the air?  Does the game stay on or does the TV go off?  An astounding 22% of us say they have had a game on while having sex.

It could make for some fun radio if you open up the phones and solicit to find listeners who are among the 22%.  Probe them for PG stories of their game-on experiences to use on the air.

PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY DIDN’T ALWAYS KNOW EACH OTHER

If you’ve got kids around the house this summer, you’ve probably made your fair share of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  But, did you know peanut butter and jelly were once strangers?  During its early years, peanut butter was a delicacy, only to be served in upscale tearooms.  Chefs combined it with beef, pimientos, Worcestershire sauce, and other ingredients.  But around 1900, peanut butter met jelly, and the sweet-salty combination was an instant hit with kids.  As the commercial peanut butter industry took off, the cost of the spread dropped dramatically.  By the time the Great Depression hit, hungry Americans were relying on PB&J as a cheap, nutritious meal, and later, during World War II, soldiers were scarfing them down on the battlefield.  The sandwich has been a national touchstone ever since.  Today, the average American child eats about 1,500 PB&J sandwiches before finishing high school.  Each year Americans consume 500 million pounds of peanut butter, enough to cover the floor of the Grand Canyon.

WHAT IS THE CORRECT FONT TO USE FOR A RANT?

As if there wasn’t enough hype going on already about Lebron James’ departure for Miami, there is now also the great font controversy.  On Friday morning Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert wrote a scathing open letter about Lebron’s unfaithfulness to his hometown saying things like, “Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.”  The letter, described by one sports writer as “cramazing” as in crazy-amazing, was apparently originally written in, what bloggers are calling, the “childish” font Comic Sans MS.  (In case you don’t know what that looks like this sentence has been written with Comic Sans MS.)  Apparently only six-year-olds and grandmothers are allowed to use this font, according to the font snobs I read.

Is there really a font hierarchy that I am just unaware of or are all of these bloggers just making this up?  Personally I’d like to know if there are any other fonts out there that I need to avoid just in case I ever feel the urge to write a ranting open letter to the media and public.  So, consider the topic, “What is the Correct Font to Use For a Rant?”

Since this is a visual idea you may need to post a few options on your website so that listeners can go to it to see the options.  Then, have your listeners vote on which one Dan Gilbert should have used instead of Comic Sans MS.  To bring this to complete resolution send the results of the font poll to Dan Gilbert so that next time he does not commit a font faux pas.

DON’T NEGOTIATE ON AN EMPTY STOMACH

If you are going to talk to your boss about a raise or buying a new car, make sure you eat something first.  Scientists at the University of South Dakota investigated the way blood glucose impacts the way we think about present and future rewards by testing subjects who had sugary or diet drinks.  When offered a small amount of money the next day or a larger sum at a later date, those with lower blood sugar tended to opt for short-term rewards.  It seems we’re more future-oriented and make better decisions when more energy is available.
