HIGH-TECH APPLIANCES ARE THE NEXT BIG THING

While Americans are currently obsessed with new technologies such as the iPad and iPhone, lurking just around the corner are some really cool new appliances that will revolutionize our day-to-day lives.  Soon you’ll be able to buy super energy-saving dishwashers, washers, dryer, and other appliances. These appliances will be able to receive signals from your utility company.  That way, they can alert you when energy costs are lowest.  They will also be able to automatically adjust their operating cycle to reduce energy usage.

Also on the horizon are appliances equipped with push-button repair capability. If there’s a problem with your appliance, you press a button, put your phone up to it, and call the repair number.  The machine will then beep out a code to the service center at the other end, so it can pinpoint – and maybe even fix – the problem.  LG washers are among the first with this cool capability.

If you are sick of having to change the bags on your vacuum, keep your eye out for the new dirt-compacting vacuums.  They will compress the debris they pick up so that you won’t have to replace bags or empty bagless models as often.  You can find that feature on some new LG uprights starting at $300.

GET CASH FOR YOUR GIFT CARDS

If you have unwanted gift cards still sitting around from the holidays, you can turn them into cash at dozens of websites.  Sellers can get up to 90% of a card’s value.  Some sites also let you swap cards.  And buyers can snap up cards at those sites, paying as little as 80% of the face value.  The prices offered for $50 gift cards ranged from 60% to 90% of the value depending on the site and the merchant.  Walmart’s card was the most valuable.

Before you cash in on your gift cards be sure to check several websites to find the best price.  According to Consumer Reports, CardPool.com and PlasticJungle.com are the best paying sites.  Sites that never had the best prices were Mercardi, com MosterGift-Card.com, and GiftCardBuyBack.com, although no one site gave buyers the best deals.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL SUPPORT GROUP

There are few moments more emotional for parents than the day they have to send their child off to that first day of kindergarten.  This year, as there is every year, you’ll find gaggles of mothers and fathers sobbing uncontrollably at the doors of your local elementary schools.  So consider sending someone from your morning show to a local school on the first day of school to record the reactions of parents who have just dropped their kids off.  Offer each of them an invitation to join you for a free breakfast somewhere near the school where they can band together to provide each other with emotional support.

WHAT ARE THE ODDS YOUR KID MAKES IT TO THE PROS?

As parents watch their kids play a sport and do it well, it’s hard not to dream of them going pro and supporting you for the rest of your life.  However, reality dictates that you spend more time encouraging your kids to study harder than to practice free throws.  Only 8% of college baseball, basketball, and football players even make the draft for their pro sport.  Only 2% make it onto a professional team.  The odds are a lot higher that your child will get a good paying job if he gets a good education.

I HAD A DANNY BONADUCE MOMENT WHEN I….

August 13th is former child star, radio personality, and rehab veteran Danny Bonaduce’s 51st birthday.  Danny is on a pretty long list of celebrities who have struggled with drug and alcohol problems.  While, hopefully, most of us will never experience some of the things Danny and people like Lindsay Lohan, Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. have, all of us have had moments where we wish we hadn’t had that one extra drink.

This brings to mind the topic, “I Had a Danny Bonaduce Moment When I….”.  Solicit stories from your audience of embarrassing things they have done after having that one extra drink.  Look for the single most entertaining example of having one too many and crown that one the Ultimate Danny Bonaduce Moment.
